AirPower: Apple’s Wireless Charging Mat is Cancelled

Apple today officially canceled Airpower. “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have canceled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,” said Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

Apple first introduced the Airpower wireless charger product in September 2017. The idea was to create a mat where you can put your iPhone to charge. This mat also had the option to charge Apple-Watch and AirPod. The AirPower cancellation brings big disappointment to fans, as it promised to do things that no other wireless charger can do.

Airpower had the overheating issue, as it carries multiple coils that let charger work with no exact charging point. Apple recently launched AirPod with wireless charging capability which also mentioned AirPower. Apple is still looking to build a high standard hardware and AirPower might take time to be back.
